Vidyant P. G. Degree College, Lucknow organized a seminar at Gandhi Bhawan on “The Future of Modern Civilization”. The Chief Guest of the seminar was Vice Chancellor of BabaSaheb B .R Ambedkar Central University, Lucknow, Prof. B. Hanumaih. He said, “Science must be put to creative use for the welfare of the mankind”.
Prof. Ramsaran Joshi, Head of Central Hindi Sansthan, Agra said that avarice and irresponsibility towards one’s duty are the two major sores of society. The needs of the marginalized people, the Adivasis and Dalits, have to be addressed not just in print but in action too. Prof. Arun Kumar, Economist from JNU, Delhi who is well known for his book “Black Economy”, said that in 1996 the black money in circulation was 40% of the economy and now after liberalization it is 1000%. The PadmaShri Poet, Leeladhar Jaguri said that technology has overpowered the comman man and he is finding himself lost in the modern civilization. Prof. Durga Prashad of Hindi Department of Jamia Millia Islamia, Delhi said that because of the economic and social policies of the developed world, the whole world seems to be heading towards disaster. Dr A. P. Tiwari of Economics Dept. of Vidyant College said that the biggest threat to civilization was the arms race, and the budget on arms in 1990 was 90 million dollars, but now it is 1000 million dollars. Despite this, the world is insecure. Therefore, Nuclear disarmament is the need of the hour. The Principal of Vidyant College, Dr. Dharam Kaur said that the dalits and women, all deserve freedom and space and there needs to be fresh debate on the empowerment of these doubly marginalized groups amongst the intellectuals present today.
Also present in the seminar were Historian Dr P. K. Srivastava, Prof. Chauthi Ram Yadav, Former Head of Hindi Dept, Prof. Chamanlal Head, School of Languages, Literature and Culture studies, JNU, Delhi and many more. “Prem Chand ki Rajnetik Chetna”, written by Dr. Dharam Kaur was also released on this occasion.
Dr. Rajeev Shukla of Vidyant College enumerated the various activities of the college and praised Dr Taru Sen, the Manager, for his continuous encouragement and support to the academic activities of the college.
The seminar was special as it drew writers, media persons, economists, scientists- political and social, academicians from distant towns and neighboring cities as well as from universities and degree colleges. These people raised the level of the debate.
